Teófilo G. Berdeja Prieto
Teo Berdeja is a corporate partner with a broad multinational transactional practice. He has structured and negotiated international banking transactions, cross-border and domestic mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures, equity funds, project financings and numerous other kinds of transactions and commercial arrangements.
Mr. Berdeja received his BA in 1971 from Colegio La Salle, his J.D. in 1975 from Universidad Iberoamericana and his LL.M. in 1978 from Harvard Law School.
Mr. Berdeja is a partner at Berdeja Abogados. Prior to joining Berdeja Abogados he was a research assistant in the SLADE Project of Stanford Law School, and an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York during 1979 to 1980.
Mr. Berdeja represented HSBC Holdings plc in its acquisition through a tender offer and subsequent recapitalization of Mexico’s fourth largest banking group, Grupo Financiero Bital; HSBC Pensiones in its merger with Allianz Rentas Vitalicias; International Finance Corporation in connection with the financing of a petrochemical project in Guatemala; a leading Mexican bank in the finance of a natural gas combined cycle power facility in Veracruz, Mexico; creditors in Aeromexico’s bankruptcy, its subsequent sale and recapitalization; he counsels board of directors and board committees on corporate governance matters and crisis management.
Based on surveys of other practitioners, he has been identified as a leading lawyer in Chambers Latin America, Legal 500 Latin America, Mergers and Acquisitions Handbook and IFLR: Guide to the World’s Leading Financial Law Firms.
Mr. Berdeja regularly speaks and writes on international finance. He is the author of Mexico: Private Equity, European Lawyer, 2014; Mexico: Mutual Fund Regulation, (The World Bank, 1996) (co- author), and International Securities Regulation, Mexico Chapter, Dobbs Ferry: Oceana Publications, Inc., 1992, and several articles on financial matters.
